I'm not a big fan of guns in general, so finding a way to make MCH fit into Schwarzwaelder's background was a challenge... But I was inspired by the Aetheromatic Auger (the aether bazooka from the revamped Diadem) and the Skysteel's Factory primary purpose (building stuff) to turn MCH into a more "craftsman with gadgets" kind of job. Nowadays I mostly play MCH to do my chocobo races (yes the chocobo has been enhanced with gadgets too).
